For the sixth, year Truro is a member of Communities in Bloom (CiB), a national program which encourages the improvement of residential, business and industrial neighborhoods, parks, open spaces and streetscapes through community involvement.

Town Parks & Recreation crews were busy over the summer season, installing and maintaining flower baskets and garden beds throughout the downtown core, Heritage Districts and Victoria Park. New projects for the 2007 growing season are the installation of a port-a-park and additional and bridge planters.

Port-a-Parks are portable parks and refer to the installation of temporary landscape elements such as planters, benches, pathways and lighting, which can be moved and reassembled as required. The Committee is also exploring the viability of an art feature to the port-a-parks.

Bridge Planters for Brunswick St. at Cumane and Willow St. at the Armoury as well as an additional four planters on East Prince St. have been planted by the CiB Committee volunteers.

We thank the Parks & Recreation Department for their assistance and diligent watering.

A community project involving CiB Committee members and students of the Digital Animation Department of the NS Community College under leadership of Holly Lennox, resulted in the creation of CiB's first mural, located on the Duke Street wall of Les Mosher's Home Hardware Store on Willow Street. The attractive Mural, designed by NSCC student Steven Hawkins, depicts scenes of Victoria Park, Victoria Square and Kiwanis Park. A second mural was developed in the summer of 2005, on the south side of the Truro Centre, again directed by Holly Lennox, with the support of Benchmark Developments and community volunteers.

The Town of Truro was evaluated in the 2006 National Edition of Communities in Bloom and was awarded five blooms with a special commendation for Heritage Conservation. This year we are participating again in the "Friends" category which is non-competitive field. The CiB Committee encourages all individuals, businesses, industries and institutions to continue to enhance Truro's appearance in the future. Beautification through Community Participation....
